Sorry, Joni...

These are favourites:

...but I don't think I could ever actually go for these Birkies. (note: when my daughter saw this picture, she said, "Oh! Too bad they don't have a Guinea Pig on them.") I'm afraid all I've ever worn are the old standby, Oldie-But-Goodie, down-home style, quintessential Jesus Birkenstocks:

The classic Arizona! I got my first pair shortly before I moved to Europe, and spent an energetic summer hitchiking, taking cable cars and trains all over Europe with my fabulous sister. I became so attached to these Birks that I kept them long after their expiry date, when the rubber sole and half the cork had worn completely off the heels. They met their sad demise when I finally wore them while wading in a creek with my daughters.

I do miss those Birks.

So I think this summer I shall take the plunge and buy another pair, exactly like the others. Although I do feel a wild, crazy urge to break away from the Jesus sandal mold and try out these puppies: ... which I have loved and mildly coveted for several years now. (But I probably won't.)

Check this out: here's me in barely-post-communist Prague, wearing unfortunate 1994 jeans (belted and pleated, the snazzy "Euro" style) and a communist-era hat: Those were the days, eh, Shan? I'd give a million dollars to be there again with you!

You know, I was thinking the other day that you guys made it to Europe, and I never did. I've been thinking that might actually be a good project for a year or two from now, when this job ends. I was planning on a six-week trek to BC, but it would be fun to drink Guinness in Ireland too.

'94 was the same year Scott went to Europe. I should examine his pictures and see if I see you guys in the background anywhere!
Hope today was better.
I'm off for some alone time. A nice relaxing walk around the block!!(much needed!)

I don't know, Farkus... nobody drinks beer like Canadians. Come up to the Great White North, and I'll buy you a whole six-pack of Guinness!
